DESCRIPTION:
This is a monoic giant past of the Arecacea family. The trunk is smooth, of 25-30 m high and 1.5 to 2 m wide. The leaves of 4 to 5 m long and of brilliant green color. It begins to flourish between the 30 and 60 years. The fruits are fleshy, yellowish drupes, of 3 to 4 cm and formed in 3 to 12 clusters with other 900 fruits each one. GROWING AND ENVIROMENT: Formerly it was in all the central valleys from Limarν to the Maule river, but the population has diminished. Nowadays its natural distribution is from the IV region to the VII Region.
USES: The leaves have been used for building roofs and the spans for food and the coconuts for sweet shops, everything now controlled by the governmental authorities. Another characteristic utility is the extraction of honey, which is studied to be extracted without killing the palm.
